How to Choose a Logistics School
How do you select the best logistics school
Certain schools have created programs for warehouse workers, due to the huge demand for education that focuses specifically on logistics. Companies want them to understand how their work affects the customers they serve and how their work within one department can affect activities at other locations as well, says Kathleen Hedland, director of education and research at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.
There are numerous degrees to choose from, but all offer foundation courses that cover the basics of supply chain management and operations, procurement transport networks, inventory management and warehousing. Some universities offer specializations in e-commerce, logistics for retail transportation, logistical analysis and global logistics management.
Graduates are able to work in roles such as supply chain managers, logisticians buying agents industrial production managers and distribution managers. They can also pursue certifications like the Certified Supply Chain Manager or the Certified Public Contract Manager to increase their chances of success in their careers.
In addition to the courses offered take into consideration whether the institution is accredited by an organization such as the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation that recognizes 8,200 institutions and 44,000 programs. Also look for a university that has a suitable student-teacher ratio, as this will help ensure you receive quality instruction.
Some colleges offer hybrid or online programs, which include classroom instruction and online learning opportunities. This kind of format is attractive to employees who work on the flexibility of their schedules and are not able or unwilling to attend traditional classes. Some online-only courses provide associate’s degrees or certificates, while other programs offer bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
